The Radium Girls was for a competition brief set by the V&A that was later cancelled due to COVID. Within the brief we had to create a book that was from imagination, or an historical event. I decided on historical. The book couldn't contain any sort of story telling, only images could push the narrative forward. This book detailed the lives of women who were known as 'The Radium Girls'. A group of girls who painted clock dials with the highly radioactive radium. The dangers were unknown to them, and after a few years of painting many of them died. Before they passed, these women went on to help fight for many of the essential working rights we benefit from today.
Radium was commonly nicknamed 'liquid sunshine' this inspired the illustration on the righthand page.
